Levelling the Playing Field is linking up with GamCare to offer our specialist partners access to their Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention programme.
Gambling harm affects around 55,000 young people (aged 11-16) across England, Scotland and Wales and Gambling Commission research from 2019 shows more could be at risk.
Harms associated with gambling can include impact on both physical and mental health, as well as a variety of impacts on family members and friends which extend far beyond financial concerns. For young people who are affected, this could mean a detrimental impact on their education, their home life, and beyond.
To help the LtPF network support ethnically diverse young people in their care who may be affected by gambling (either themselves or in their family), we are offering two training opportunities:
1. For LtPF Specialists and wider community and statutory organisations - Young People’s Support Service - GamCare & Training (three hours)
2. For Criminal and Youth Justice (Community and Secure Estate) staff - Working with the Criminal Justice System - GamCare & Training (three hours)
The Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme is being delivered over the next four years by GamCare and their partner network in conjunction with the young gamblers and gamers charity, YGAM. The programme stems from a recognised lack of awareness within the education and youth sectors about how gambling-related harm can impact young people.
GamCare was founded in 1997 and is the leading national provider of free information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling-related harm.
GamCare’s aim is to ensure that everyone who may be affected by gambling harms can access age-appropriate support – whether they are concerned about themselves or a loved one. For young people aged 11–18, they are introducing new support options as part of their national Young People’s Service.
As of September 2020, they have introduced a team of dedicated practitioners who can provide safe and effective support for young people under 18.
Helpline: GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline, which is open 24 hours, seven days a week to provide support to people who are experiencing gambling-related harms (gambler or affected other)
Treatment: GamCare offers a range of tailored treatment options for people experiencing gambling-related harm.
Industry: GamCare offers the Safer Gambling Standards accreditation and social responsibility training to gambling operators.
