Levelling the Playing Field is offering its specialist partners training in awareness and disclosure of modern slavery and human trafficking.
The training (funded by Levelling the Playing Field) will be delivered by Hope for Justice, a leading global anti-slavery NGO whose work extends across five continents. They have hubs all over the UK dealing with modern slavery and exploitation on the ground, and also work at Government level to address these growing issues.
Many of Levelling the Playing Field’s partners work with children who may be vulnerable to modern slavery in the form of criminal exploitation (e.g. county lines), sexual exploitation, forced labour or domestic servitude.
The training will support LtPF’s common goals, particularly our second goal of preventing and diverting ethnically diverse children from becoming involved in the Criminal Justice System, as we know there is a strong link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and offending.
Hope for Justice’s training will raise front line delivery staff’s awareness, help them recognise the signs and indicators of modern slavery within an individual, and to respond appropriately if a victim is identified.
“The trend of human trafficking has accelerated recently to the point it’s right on people’s doorsteps without them realising it,” says Alister Bull, Hope for Justice’s Training Manager. “Vulnerable people, including the young, can lose their freedom and potentially their lives.
“We want to create awareness within communities working with vulnerable young people who could be exploited as victims of human trafficking and modern slavery. Not everyone will identify as being within that vulnerability but there could be a situation behind that where people have lost their freedom and autonomy.”
The training consists of two workshops delivered online via a ‘virtual classroom’ using varied learning mediums such as videos, PowerPoint style presentation, group discussions and case studies using 'break-out room' features. The training is specially tailored and, where appropriate, will include local case studies, statistics and referral pathways.
The first workshop, ‘Modern Slavery Awareness’ (CPD certified) has the following objectives:
- Explain what modern slavery is and identify the different types that exist
- Recognise the signs and indicators of the different types of modern slavery
- Respond appropriately if a victim of modern slavery is identified;
The next stage, ‘Modern Slavery Disclosure Encounter’ (CPD certified), is more advanced and aims to:
- Outline what a Disclosure Encounter is and what enables it to occur
- Explain how trauma can present in a Potential Victim of Trafficking’s (PVoT) behaviour
- Describe how trauma-informed listening can allow a PVoT to disclose
- Explore what encourages or discourages a disclosure by a PVoT
This trauma-informed listening workshop involves observing two film reconstructions of a disclosure encounter either of sexual exploitation or forced labour.
Each delegate will increase their sense of observation through film, group work, guide notes and supported by a facilitator. The delegate will understand what is involved in obtaining information from a victim and outlining the importance of the setting when a victim discloses information in relation to the NRM process.
Paul Corry, Adult Safeguarding, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said of the Hope for Justice training:
"Hope for Justice is an amazing non-profit organisation which aims to end human trafficking and modern slavery. We worked closely with one of the training specialists, who delivered a bespoke workshop to our safeguarding champions to raise awareness across our organisation.
“This training was a great insight into modern-day slavery and human trafficking and really pitched at the right level for health care staff, with a local focus for us to be able to identify, respond and support cases. The feedback from the champions was fantastic and I can’t thank Hope for Justice enough for helping support our organisation to be more inclusive, person-centred and survivor-focused.”
