As part of our focus on monitoring and evaluation in May, we asked Dr. Craig Corrigan from Sport4Life, our specialist partners in Birmingham, for his top tips.
Whilst studying at the University of Wolverhampton, my research investigated how 'Sport for Good' charities and organisations can greater evidence their social impact through the use of monitoring and evaluation (M&E). My research involved an in-depth focus on Sport 4 Life, and I loved it so much that I returned for a full-time paid position upon completion of my studies.
I feel privileged to be able to experience the harsh realities of collecting M&E in my role as Sport 4 Life's Training Project Manager, alongside developing my knowledge of the academic theories throughout my research.
Below are five key pointers that my research identified, which will hopefully help other partners in the Levelling the Playing Field network with their M&E practices:
1. Embrace M & E. It's never going to go away, so look to build in as much achievable M&E as possible and ensure that your staff and volunteers understand its importance. It is much more than a tick box for funders.
2. Involve your participants fully in your M&E. What works best for them? How can they be more involved? e.g. Vlogs, social media uploads and focus groups in a social environment.
3. Capture stories not just numbers! We can all focus purely on outputs but try to evidence, through case studies, the impact you are having on individuals.
4. Don't overclaim! If you are having a great impact on 10 people, shout about it and be honest. Funders will appreciate your honesty.
5. Learn from your data. Take the time to evaluate your findings. What does this mean for you and your participants? Don't let your data gather dust on a shelf, learn from it and use it to evidence your impact!
